Designing for stage: scale, sightlines and story

Why the same visual system that works on a phone can fail on a 40-metre LED wall — and how we design for both.

Designing for stage: scale, sightlines and story

A phone is intimate; a stage is architectural. Type that sings at 6pt on a screen dies at 20 feet. We design stage systems from the back row inward, not from the design file outward.

The three lenses

  • Silhouette — is the shape readable at 30 metres?
  • Rhythm — does the motion match the room's energy?
  • Colour — does it survive stage lighting, or fight it?

Pixel pitch is a design constraint, not an IT one

Designers who ignore pixel pitch ship stages that look sharp in the file and mushy in the room. We ask for the LED spec on day one and design every screen graphic against it — not against the Figma canvas.

Motion that supports the show-caller

Stage motion is a partner to the show-caller, not a solo performer. Loops must be cue-safe, transitions must be forgiving of a late walk-on, and idle states must never upstage the person at the mic.

"The stage graphic that wins the night is the one nobody notices — because it made the speaker look inevitable."
